According to Johns Hopkins University and the US Government Accountability Office, 22% of medical research in the US is funded by the federal government. The US government supports research with an annual investment of over $60 billion, with a significant portion of investment coming in the form of grants.

In 2023, the NIH alone provided nearly $35 billion in grant funding to researchers. In 2025, federally funded research included investigations related to Alzheimer’s Disease, brain disorders, cancer and a few hundred more. Bloomberg reports that cutting research and education funding will slow the growth of US-based scientific talent. The US has been at the forefront of scientific research and advancement since WWII. In this new realm of diminished funding, who will lead the way?
